Passage 1
Why Headaches Should Be Taken More Seriously
More than just a headache
AAbout one in seven people experience migraine. Millions of others have different headache disorders. The writer has cluster headaches, which can cause extremely severe pain. For people with these conditions, a headache is not a small problem. Each attack can seriously affect daily life.
Headache research receives little attention
BFor many years, headache research has received less attention than many other medical fields. Some diseases are seen as more important or more serious than others. Headache disorders are often treated as less important, even though they affect millions of people.
Social attitudes may be part of the problem
CMigraine is about three times more common in women than in men. In the past, people sometimes wrongly treated migraine as a problem caused by female weakness or emotion. Even today, people with migraine may face negative judgment. This social attitude may help explain why the condition receives less attention.
A large difference in research funding
DMigraine and depression create similar levels of disability and affect similar numbers of people. However, they receive very different amounts of research money. According to the article, depression received about $700 million in research funding in one year. Migraine received only about $41 million. The writer believes this difference is unfair because migraine can damage people's work, mental health and quality of life.
Treatments are still limited
EBecause there has not been enough research, progress in migraine treatment has been slow. A group of medicines called triptans became available in the 1990s. They helped some patients but did not work for everyone. A newer type of medicine, called C.G.R.P. inhibitors, arrived in 2018. These drugs can prevent migraine and have helped many patients. However, they still do not work well for everyone. Some people receive little or no relief.
Migraine is also expensive
FMigraine does not only cause pain. It also costs society a large amount of money. Billions of dollars are spent every year on migraine healthcare. There are also indirect costs because people may miss work or be less productive. One study estimated these indirect costs at $19.3 billion in the United States.
Migraine is complicated but common
GScientists still do not completely understand migraine. It may involve the brain, blood vessels, hormones, brain chemicals and genetics. The writer accepts that migraine is scientifically complicated. However, she argues that this is not a good reason to ignore it. Around 45 million Americans are affected, so more research is necessary.
Signs of political interest
HHeadache organizations are asking the government to take the problem more seriously. A new bill has also been introduced in Congress to create a national headache initiative. The writer believes government leaders do not need to wait for perfect conditions before supporting more headache research.
More research could bring large benefits
IThe writer argues that migraine is common, disabling and expensive, but still not well understood. She believes a relatively small increase in research funding could produce important benefits. Better treatments could help people work more, reduce medical visits and, most importantly, reduce human suffering.
