1. Coordinating Conjunctions (Liên từ đẳng lập)

Liên từ kết hợp nối hai thành phần NGANG HÀNG: hai từ, hai cụm, hoặc hai mệnh đề độc lập. Có đúng bảy từ, ghi nhớ bằng chữ FANBOYS.

or	lựa chọn	You can take the bus, or you can walk.	Bạn có thể đi xe buýt hoặc đi bộ.
yet	tương phản mạnh hơn but, hàm ý bất ngờ	She was exhausted, yet she kept working.	Cô ấy kiệt sức nhưng vẫn tiếp tục làm việc.
so	kết quả	It was raining, so we cancelled the trip.	Trời mưa nên chúng tôi hủy chuyến đi.

Quy tắc dấu phẩy

Khi FANBOYS nối hai MỆNH ĐỀ ĐỘC LẬP thì phải có dấu phẩy TRƯỚC liên từ. Khi chỉ nối hai từ hoặc hai cụm thì không cần: She bought bread and milk. Nếu hai mệnh đề rất ngắn cũng có thể bỏ phẩy: He came and he left.

nor kéo theo đảo ngữ

Sau nor phải đảo trợ động từ lên trước chủ ngữ: He does not smoke, nor does he drink. Sai: nor he drinks. Tương tự với neither: I have not seen it, and neither has she.

Liên từ tương quan - correlative conjunctions

such ... that	đến mức	It was such a difficult exam that half the class failed.
so ... that	đến mức	The exam was so difficult that half the class failed.
as ... as	bằng	The results were as surprising as the researchers had predicted.

Hòa hợp chủ ngữ với either or và neither nor

Động từ chia theo chủ ngữ GẦN NÓ NHẤT. Neither the teacher nor the students are ready. Neither the students nor the teacher is ready. Quy tắc này gọi là quy tắc gần kề.

Cấu trúc song song với liên từ tương quan

Thành phần sau mỗi vế phải cùng dạng ngữ pháp. Sai: She is not only intelligent but also works hard. Đúng: She is not only intelligent but also hardworking. Xem thêm chủ điểm 20.

2. Subordinating Conjunctions (Liên từ phụ thuộc)

Liên từ phụ thuộc mở đầu một mệnh đề KHÔNG thể đứng độc lập. Nếu mệnh đề phụ đứng TRƯỚC thì phải có dấu phẩy ngăn cách. Nếu đứng SAU thì thường không cần dấu phẩy.

Kết quả	so ... that, such ... that, so that	The traffic was so heavy that we missed the flight.
Cách thức	as, as if, as though, the way	He behaves as if he owned the company.
Nơi chốn	where, wherever, everywhere	Wherever tourism grows, local prices tend to rise.
So sánh	than, as ... as, the more ... the more	The situation is worse than we expected.

Ba liên từ đa nghĩa cần cẩn thận

as có ba nghĩa: khi, bởi vì, và như. Nghĩa phụ thuộc ngữ cảnh. since có hai nghĩa: từ khi chỉ thời gian, và bởi vì chỉ nguyên nhân. while có hai nghĩa: trong khi chỉ thời gian, và trong khi đó chỉ tương phản. Khi viết, nếu sợ mơ hồ thì chọn từ rõ nghĩa hơn: dùng because thay vì as hoặc since.

Không dùng hai liên từ cho một quan hệ

Tiếng Việt nói tuy nhưng, vì nên. Tiếng Anh chỉ dùng MỘT. Sai: Although he was tired, but he kept working. Sai: Because it rained, so we stayed home. Đúng: Although he was tired, he kept working. Because it rained, we stayed home.

3. Adverb Clauses (Mệnh đề trạng ngữ)

Mệnh đề trạng ngữ đóng vai trò như một trạng từ, trả lời các câu hỏi khi nào, ở đâu, tại sao, như thế nào, với điều kiện gì. Chúng luôn phụ thuộc vào mệnh đề chính và có thể di chuyển vị trí.

until / till	cho đến khi	We waited until the results were announced.
as soon as / once	ngay khi	As soon as the data arrives, we will analyse it.
by the time	vào lúc mà, thường đi với thì hoàn thành	By the time we arrived, the meeting had ended.
whenever	bất cứ khi nào	Whenever fuel prices rise, transport costs follow.

Mệnh đề thời gian không dùng will

Sau when, before, after, as soon as, until, by the time, once thì dùng thì HIỆN TẠI để chỉ tương lai. Sai: I will call you when I will get home. Đúng: I will call you when I get home. Với hành động hoàn tất trước thì dùng hiện tại hoàn thành: I will call you after I have finished.

Rút gọn mệnh đề trạng ngữ

Cùng chủ ngữ, động từ bị động	bỏ chủ ngữ và be, giữ V3	Although it was written quickly, the report was accurate. → Although written quickly, the report was accurate.
Bỏ luôn liên từ	chỉ giữ cụm phân từ	Waiting for the bus, she read a book.
Có be cộng tính từ hoặc danh từ	bỏ chủ ngữ và be	When he was a student, he worked part-time. → When a student, he worked part-time.

Lỗi phân từ treo

Chỉ rút gọn được khi HAI mệnh đề CÙNG chủ ngữ. Sai: Walking down the street, the trees looked beautiful - câu này hàm ý cây đang đi bộ. Đúng: Walking down the street, I thought the trees looked beautiful.
